I believe that some people have advantages in sports do too how they were born.  Genetically some people are born taller than others.  This gives them an advantage in basketball, because they can get to the rebound or shoot over people much easier.

Gladwell’s opinion was that people who are born earlier like in January tend to be more talented or stronger in what they do.  He used the example of hockey and how if they are bigger built and stronger they will be a much better player, will get to play with higher leagues so he will get better with the competition, and he will be more mature so he will be more committed and want to practice more.

I agree with him because people who are born earlier are old for their age, so sometimes they will be stronger than the average age group he is in.  This will be an advantage for them because it would be easier for them to get around the guy and you could shoot much harder.  The chapter for sure made me rethink what I said, because it is so true that if you are stronger and more mature you will do much better in the sport you play.

He used a hockey roster with their date of birth so you could see that most of the hockey players were born in that time period.  They were very convincing because I saw that most of the hockey players were born in the month on January and that proves the point that they are good at what they do because they are older than their age group.

I play volleyball outside of school. People do have advantages when it comes to activities, because some could be really good and some could be really bad. But when it comes to playing the game they get become really competitive because they want to win. Students can act differently to achieve their goals.
Gladwell’s opinion to the daily question is, he thinks that the teenagers who are older, do better in school/sports. I don’t agree with him because many teenagers who are younger also do well in school/sports. It doesn’t matter how old you are everyone has the same advantage. His chapter did not make me re-think my response to the daily question because it doesn't make any sense to me to why he thinks that way. Everyone has an equal chance of doing their best.

Blog post 2: Synthesis

I do think that when you are fast or very coordinated it does help you excel in sports differently rather than if you were not so coordinated and slow.  For example me, I am not very big but I am very fast and I am well coordinated and it helps me a lot in basketball because I can beat everyone to the hoop in a fastbreak and then score. Also being coordinated helps because I can dribble the ball and no one can steal it from me. After reading a part in the book "Outliers" I know I must be right because Gladwell's opinion is the same is mine. It did not make me have to rethink the daily question ,I still believe certain people have advantages when it comes to doing well with competitive and other goal orientated activities. Some of the sources he used to make his points are just certain birthdates kids had and most of the kids that were good were born in the month January February or March which meant they were bigger and more prepared. Yes those sources were kind of convincing but it just goes back to what I said.

I do believe that so people have advantages but some are used to make people better at things. Like the time when I won a blue ribbon on my swim team. I had worked so hard to achieve it and I had trained for weeks before to make sure I achieved my goal. There are a couple of reasons why I was able to accomplish my goal, one is that I was faster than most of the other girls and two it’s because I was taller and slimmer than they were. Now in relation to the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell his opinion is that most people have advantages that make them better at what they do. I completely agree with his opinion because it is true most people do have advantages that make them better than others and at what they do. For example, he used hockey players and how the older ones and stronger ones get more training so they are better at the sport than others are. In conclusion, I do believe that some people have advantages and this makes them better at what they do.

A sport that I do is dance, and in dance there are some advantages that people can have. One is to just be born with natural dancing skills. Another is to dance from a really young age to any age you want to stop. So yes, there are advantages to dance. In the book we read Gladwell said that people born in January,February, and march have a better chance of getting into the higher level hockey team. I do agree with that, because sometimes they base the teams on age, they don't always base it on skill level. Some sources he used to make his point was the list of players he found, with there birth day on it too, and yes they were convincing sources because they provided evidence to go along with what he was saying.

Aurora Santos Blog Post 2: Synthesis.

When I think about accomplishing goals I never thought that you can be born with advantages or disadvantages. I always thought that people who are successful are the people who work really hard for the part. Malcom Gladwell (author of the Outliers) stated “we don’t ride from nothing. We do owe something to parentage and patronage.” He prove that most of the professional hockey player were born in the first three months, because that is when the beginning of the winter season and that they had more lessons to prepare. Schools have done thing as well, if you are born in the early year you would be put you in a high class so when you move on to a high school you are automatic in the advance placement classes all because they had more of a learning step. After all I now I think that we all the great successful people had a big advantage and people don’t even realize.

Blog Post 2: SYNTHESIS

“Daily Question”

I would have to say no, because we all start the same way. None of us are born being able to do anything. We all in one way or another have to work for what we want. Whether it’s for a sport, concert, and a play we all have to work for that achievement we want. We are not all born being perfect at everything there is. It all depends on your determination you have for what you want.

“The Matthew Effect”

Matthew Gladwells opinion is that some people are not born with natural talent. They have to earn it. I would have to agree with him people are not born perfect they have to train for it. What he wrote only made me think my response to the daily question was right. The way he use hockey from Canada to support his claim was really useful. It really helped to understand what he meant.

I do dance recitals at Point Dance Academy. People do have advantages when it comes to competitive and goal-oriented activities because some can be more athletic in sports then others. Or more flexible in dance, gymnastics, etc.

Gladwell's opinion on the daily question was that teenagers who are older do better in school and in sports. I don't agree with him because age doesn't matter, someone can be 15 and do bad in school, while a 13 year old could be doing good. It depends on your study habits, if you do homework or not, what college you want to go to, and what you do to help yourself achieve goals in school. Some of the sources he used to back up his point was that hockey players who are 9 and 10, will get picked for the "rep" squad and their gonna get better coaching, their teammates are gonna be better, they'll also get to play 50 or 65 games a season instead of 20 games like the one's in the "house" league. To me, these weren't convincing sources because how can you prove that the "rep" squad is getting better coaching and has better teammates? The "home" league could be getting the same coaching and have better teammates.

I believe that some people do have advantages. When I was in the junior Olympics I had to be with the 15 and 16 year olds and I was only 14. Most of the people that were in my age group had much more experience than me. I was the only one that was in middle school everyone else was in high school and did high school track. This created a very big disadvantage for me when I had to run. I do agree with Gladwell because he said that most people that were born in January have an advantage and I do agree with that. The chapter didn’t make me rethink about my response it just made me connect because I’ve been through the same thing. The sources he used to convince me was hockey and birthdays and these were some of the sources he used to make his point.

Some people are born with natural talent that makes them better at some things like football, basketball, baseball. But they also train and practice to get better and to strengthen their talent by watching videos, going to camps, training, working out, etc.in the Matthew effect book he was telling us how when he looked at data he found that kids or people  born in January, February, march are better at things the kids born on a different month. His opinion on the daily question was that when people born in January, February, or March were they better than people born in different months. The chapter did not help change my daily question answer.

 Its Gladwell's opinion.

Well there was this girl in my gymnastics class named Mikayla.

She was born double jointed…so basically she was born flexible.

I however was not I had to work my way to the top and she strolls on in it is basically handed to her.

I had the highest DOD in the level, and Coach Morgan took hat away from me for her.

Gladwell’s opinion on the daily question is that kids who play sports with various ages and are older

have a better advantage in that sport like hockey.

Some people have advantages with anything goal-oriented because they just naturally have a gift to do really well. For instance, I’m good at tennis, even though I have never played before. The coach says that I’m a natural. Certain people just have it in their genes to be good at something. Most of the time, they can’t help it.
Gladwell’s opinion is that people aren’t born with goal-oriented talents. He believes that people work for their achievements. I would have to agree and disagree with him. I would agree with him because if you work hard for something, it can pay off. On the other hand, I disagree because sometimes people have natural talents and they can’t control them. Gladwell’s chapter did make me re-think my response to the daily question. To make his points, Gladwell used the player roster of the 2007 Medicine Hat Tigers and the study made by Kelly Bedard and Elizabeth Dhuey. They are convincing resources because it shows that once you get in honors classes, then you just keep being ahead. It also shows that higher-level people tend to succeed more. In the end, Gladwell changed my thoughts a little bit on if people have advantages with anything goal-oriented.

When I played Rugby over the last few years, I had a huge advantage. Not many other players on my team, or even in my league were as big or as tall as I am. I could run the ball in for a try, and hardly ever get tackled. Of course, I tackled very hard, not letting go. There are also disadvantages to being my size, like the fact that I am not very fast compared to others. As opposed to most of the backs on my team, and many other players in my league. All in all, everyone has advantages and disadvantages of their own. Everyone is good at something, but other things are harder for them to do.

This relates to what Gladwell wrote because I have the age difference, maturity difference, and physical difference that he described in his story. I agree with what he wrote, for the most part. I agree that some people have some advantages over others, and disadvantages too, but it’s no always age. I play for a u-16 (ages 14-16) Rugby team, and there are plenty of players in my league, even on my team, who are older than 14, yet I have an advantage of height and strength over them

Some people do have advantages such as age, experience, and ability that is passed in your genes. If you were born a year before your body is more mature then others who are younger. Also if someone who plays longer is better because they practice more and have better coaching, such as john Elway’s son has a good coach because his dad played in the NFL, In johns Elway genes athletic  helps him become really good. Gladwell’s ideas is that age effects maturity and how people play. I agree with galdwell because age does make a huge effect with body size. No it didn’t affect my decision   because I already know age does make a huge difference. He used rosters as his evidence.

Yes, some people have advantages. As an example, in basketball some people are tall. Also in most sports some people work harder than you and start earlier than you. As said in Outliers, Gladwell says that age is a factor in advantages. As a matter of fact it is, because most people just look at the skill instead of the age. The convincing point he made was when he put school in the factor.

The goal I have accomplished was getting into the Jazz Pack in middle school. I do not think people have certain advantages like other people do. I think everyone has equal advantages. People only say they have better advantages but only because other people work harder than others to accomplish their goals and conflicts. In my case, people practice extra on their instrument to get into the Jazz band.

In the book outliers, Gladwell expresses that people who are older excel at more activities than others who are younger. Gladwell’s opinion on the daily question is that older people do have advantages over their younger peers. After reading Gladwell’s opinion of what he has to say about advantages changed mine overall and I do agree with him. His chapter did cause me to rethink of the daily question because of what he has to say about the disadvantages younger people have. The sources that he made are physical activities where the older children mature faster than younger ones and have an advantage over them. Older children get placed on higher ranked teams which means they practice a lot more and play more games during the season. His sources were convincing enough to change my opinion.

One thing that I've done that is competitive was helping compete in a marlin tournament. My uncle was one of the many boats in the tournament. I was one of the crew members helping the client’s fish and also teaching them how to fish. This was a tournament that usually pros could only partake in. My uncle had one of the most popular boats in the Florida Keys. But his trolling for big fish skills are not among the best unlike the others. The other boats advantages were that they had more experience and have been fishing longer then my uncle.

I agree with Gladwell’s opinion that older people have advantages over the younger people. I believe this because the older fisherman knew were to go to find the marlins and other fish. While my uncle fished in one area. Gladwell’s opinion was also correct because one of the older fisherman did end up winning the tournament and winning the prize money.

When you’re doing a sport, whether its racing Motocross, playing Basketball, or kicking a soccer ball, some people can definitely  have advantages on you or others.  One reason why is the person could’ve been playing longer than you, which means that they would have more experience. Another reason is that someone could be born with the talent, or just simply become great at the sport. Which could help them. Overall, you or someone else can have an advantage at a sport, or even multiple ones. Now to the Outliers book. Gladwell (author), has many opinions and influences on the book. Gladwell’s opinion seems to be that if you want to succeed, you need to work as hard as you can, because if you want something, it’s not just going to come to you, you’re going to have to actually work for it. I agree with his opinion on the question because he’s right. It’s like this: Just because your Dad was a pro in hockey, doesn’t mean that you’re going to get the free score and get in even when you don’t work for it. Because think about it, someone else will work the Heart and to make it into the pros, and then you don’t work for it at all and still get into it. The sources that Gladwell used were convincing because what he was trying to say was very true. Although things can get hard, don’t quit and give up, because if you believe in yourself, you can make it happen, no matter who doubts you.

I think that some people do have advantages when it comes to competition and sports. Some advantages are genetic and some are just formed out of hard work and dedication. Someone who is in gymnastics and is double jointed will probably be a little better and naturally more flexible than someone who has worked hard to become flexible and to be better. It is the same situation with other sports as well, such as: football, hockey, track, swimming, lacrosse and soccer. Some are just born great and others have to work for it.

Gladwell’s opinion is that you cannot be nothing and get to something. That we a huge part of who we are and what we do we owe to our parents and in some cases our country. I do agree with Gladwell’s opinion we do need help to become something that is great that we cannot do it on our own.

Better Advantages

Yes some people who have raw talent are better than other that have to work for it and practice many times a day. Kids who have the talent don’t need to work for it they just have to show up and practice compared to the kids that have to work to get a spot on the team. The sport is all about the best of the best and if you don’t make the cut you aren’t good enough but many kids who are gifted at the sport.

After reading “The Mathew Effect” Gladwells opinion was that people who are born in the beginning of the year are more talented/ gifted because they are older and get put through things rather than the younger people. I agree because the older person is always chose over the younger person in most cases. This chapter did make me rethink my daily question because it is true that younger people are better/stronger. He used a roster of a hockey team to make his point and education gifted classes. Yes his sources were well chosen and were convincing.

My Goals to achieve in 9th Grade!

My Goals for 9th Grade that will help me get accepted into a collage are to get all A's & B's. I'm going to try my best to make honor roll this year. I would like to get involved in some sort of sport, but one that won't effect my school work. I also want to get better in Math and fully understand new concepts that we learn this year.

Why I'm Me

The reason I am who I am today is because of the life I lived in the past 15years. I never stay in one place long so I never stay attached to anything. That's just who I am. I may get to see a lot of exotic places and I have to admit it is really cool but all I ever really want to do is make real long lasting friendships because every time I would leave its like they forget who I am and what I've done for them. But at least I am a able to met new people from different cultures. It's very nice to met people from different backgrounds and religion. And that is who I basically am is because what  I e been through the past. Let me just say I am proud of who I am and I don't care what people think of me.

               See Me Now, Soon Then
My 9th grade goal is to get a good base for my future toward collage. I will do my best in school. I have a opportunity to sign up for unique classes, so I will. Another goal is to join as many clubs as I can, like The Crazy, FBLA , and Yearbook. Setting high goals is good for the human kind but is not good what people would do to finish/achieve these goals, however, I will achieve my goals with or without support from friends/family. I will wish luck to you with your goal as I will to me.
